So I've seen the new Transformers movie many of times and I noticed that the word Sabot is mentioned about every 10 to 20 minutes. The Sabot round was the humans key weapon against the Decepticons. Alot of people have been asking me "what is a Sabot round?". Well here it is. A sabot round is a kenetic energy projectile, basically a big heavy, super dense slug that punches a whole through the thickess armor effortlessly. The round's that were used in the movie were the basic fin stabillized discarding sabot penatrator, what that means is that its a big honking depleted uranium dart that's shoved down the barrel of a weapon in a big ass wedge that holds it in place while being fired. It is mentioned that its the Sabot rounds ability to generate high levels of heat to melt through armor which makes it effective, this information while somewhat true is basically a misconception. All a sabot slug is is a gaint uranium lawn dart... thats it. No explosives, no chemical heat generating ability just huge super fucking dense dart that flies EXTREMELY fast. When sabots are first used in the movie their fired from a 105mm howitzer mounted on a C130 gunship, this makes sense because a 105 would have no problem fireing a big enough sabot at a high enough velocity to tear an alien robotic organism to peices. However later in the movie 40mm sabots are used in various types of 40mm grenade launchers and seem to do a fair amount of damage to the Decepticons. In reality a 40mm sabot would probably do little to no damage to a 30 foot tall armor claded alien robot. Yes a 40mm sabot penatrator would pack a fair punch, but not nearly enough to import the kind of damage they did on the Decepticons in the movie. Considering the wide diameter of the 40mm sabot round and the short barrel its fired through, a sabot fired from weapon like that wouldn't have enough barrel to travel through to import the type of combustion pressure needed to get the sabot to fly at a high enough velocity to penatrate armor. Anyway in short... A sabot is a big dart... a long thin shaft... with a sharp pointed end with fins at the back to make it fly straight... its a dart... made out of super dense super heavy depleted uranium.
